My mechanic buddy in Phoenix told me to stop using those cheap oil filters.
About two years ago, my friend Dave kept saying I was wasting money on the $4 oil filters from the auto parts chain. He insisted I switch to the $12 Wix brand for my old truck. I ignored him for six months because I figured oil is oil and a filter is a filter. Then my engine started ticking after a 3 hour drive to Tucson. When I pulled the old filter off, the inside was all crumpled up like a paper towel. Anyone else learn the hard way that cheaping out on specific parts is just a time bomb?

Exactly what happened to me with my 97 F150. Ran a cheap Fram for 4 months and found the filter element had basically collapsed when I changed it, started hearing that same ticking noise. Swapped to a Wix and it's been smooth for over a year now... some parts just aren't worth skimping on.

Yeah my buddy had his oil light flicker after using one of those.
