My mother's old recipe card changed how I cook after 30 years

Last Tuesday I found my mother's recipe box in the basement, and her chicken and dumplings card had notes I never read before. She wrote 'use less salt, the broth will do the work' at the bottom, and I always dumped a full tablespoon in. I tried her way that night, and honestly it tasted better than anything I made in the last three decades. It got me thinking about how I stuck to my habits just because they were mine, not because they were right. My 18 year old nephew watched me cook and said 'you finally listened to grandma.' Has anyone else had a relative's old note or tip flip your whole routine upside down?

Wait, what other assumptions are you carrying around that you haven't questioned yet, like how much salt you've been adding to everything else? That's the part that gets me, how many other little rules we follow without realizing they were never rules at all.

Salt? I'm still stuck on which "rules" I invented for soup.
