That time a woodworker told me to stop sanding so much
Had a guy at a craft fair in Portland look at my cutting boards and say, 'You sanded the soul out of that grain.' I stripped back to 120 grit on my next batch and the wood actually looked alive for once. Anyone else get feedback that totally flipped their process?

120 or 150 grit leaves the wood feeling alive. Polish kills character.

Did you ever try that on a piece of figured maple? My buddy got a slab of curly maple from a local guy, hit it with 150 and sealed it up. Looked amazing but he dropped a beer on it at a party and the stain soaked right in, left a permanent dark ring. He was so bummed.

@the_lisa I get what you mean but a light 220 still keeps the grain open without killing it.
