The refund counter at REI in Portland talked me out of a $200 tent I loved

I waited 45 minutes with the broken tent pole to get a replacement, but the clerk told me the seam tape was failing too and suggested a cheaper model that I now use every weekend, so has anyone else had a store employee change their whole gear opinion on the spot?
