Unpopular opinion: my brother told me to 'just ignore the weird noise' in my car engine

He said it was probably nothing and I was being paranoid about my 2012 Honda Civic. Three months later the timing belt snapped on I-75 in Atlanta and cost me $1,200 to fix. Has anyone else taken bad car advice from a family member who was totally wrong?

oh man that's rough. i learned the hard way too except it was my dad telling me the check engine light was probably just a loose gas cap. spoiler alert it was not a loose gas cap, it was a failing catalytic converter on my old corolla that ended up costing me almost as much as the car was worth. now i just take it to my mechanic for even the smallest stuff, better to spend $50 on a diagnostic than $1200 on a belt snap or whatever. family means well but they're not mechanics, you know?

A diagnostic can save you that belt bill for sure, but catalytic converters are no joke.

@mark_carr7 a diagnostic fixes everything until you pay for the diagnostic and it's still the same noise...
