My sourdough starter died on me during a power outage last week

I was visiting my sister in Cleveland and the power went out for two whole days because of a storm, and I came home to find my starter completely dead with mold on top. Never realized how much I relied on a consistent temp until I lost three months of feeding work. Has anyone else had to restart their starter from scratch after something like this?

Oh man, that reminds me of my neighbor Dave who tried to bury an old toaster in his garden. He thought it was a good idea (you know, out of sight out of mind) but then forgot where he put it. Fast forward a few months and he's digging up a spot for some tomatoes and there it is, all rusty and gross. His dog actually dug up part of it later and dragged it onto the porch, leaving dirt all over everything. So yeah, I get the backyard thing but sometimes it comes back to haunt you in weird ways. I still say you should've just taken it to the dump though, way less hassle.

Buddy of mine tried that with an old grill. Buried it deep, thought he was clever. Rain washed the dirt away and there it was, sticking right up like a zombie.
