Vent: My sourdough starter got ruined at my sister's wedding brunch

I brought my starter to my sister's wedding brunch last weekend in Boise so I could feed it on time. My cousin thought it was expired yogurt and tossed it in the compost pile. After 14 months of keeping that thing alive, I had to start over from scratch. Has anyone else lost a starter to clueless relatives?

OH MY GOD, your brother used it to SPACKLE drywall?? That is a whole new level of ridiculous. I literally just gasped out loud reading that. I mean, sure, my cousin mistaking it for gross yogurt is bad, but at least she thought she was helping clean up. Using a sourdough starter as drywall spackle is such a specific and weird move. I can't even imagine opening a jar of that stuff and thinking "yep, this looks like a good patching compound." That is honestly one of the funniest and most heartbreaking things I have heard all week. I really hope you didn't have to watch him do it.

Honestly though, your brother might be onto something. Sourdough starter is basically flour and water mixed with bacteria. When it dries out it gets hard and crusty. I've patched holes in my garage wall with toothpaste before, so why not a fermented flour paste? At least he was trying to fix something instead of just wasting it. Sounds like a practical guy if you ask me.
