Why is it so hard to find consistent yeast packets at the grocery store?
Half the time they're dead before I even open them.

Feel your pain, yeast packets are such a gamble these days.

So when you proof it, do you ever find the yeast is just... slow? Like it takes way longer than the packet says to foam up, but it still works in the end (which is almost more annoying than a total dud).

My friend grabbed a packet from the grocery store last week, tried to make pizza dough, and it was a total fail. He mixed it with warm water and sugar, but nothing happened, not a single bubble. The dough just sat there like a lump for hours, never rose at all. He had to toss the whole batch, which really sucked after all that work. Now he checks the expiration date every time, but even that's not a sure thing. What do you do to test your yeast before baking?

Last week, I grabbed a yeast packet from Kroger and it was totally fine. I always proof it in lukewarm water with a bit of honey to test. Seems like a storage issue, not a supply problem.
