Dropped $65 on a fancy silicone mat and it was a total flop

I bought a high-end silicone rolling mat from a kitchen store in Austin because my dough kept sticking to the counter, but it slid around so much I couldn't even get a proper pie crust rolled out. After three tries and a ruined batch of cookies, I tossed it in the drawer and went back to my old floured wooden board that cost me $12. Anyone else find that expensive baking gadgets aren't always worth the hype?

My buddy @the_ruby bought one of those fancy mats last year, same price range, and his dough slid right off the counter into a pile of flour on the floor. He was so mad he threw it in the trash after two uses, then went back to his grandma's old pastry board she passed down to him. I think those expensive silicone mats are great for roasting veggies but terrible for actually rolling dough like they claim to do.

My cousin who works at a Sur La Table told me those silicone mats are basically a scam if you bake a lot. He said the only ones that actually stay put are the ones with the grippy stuff on the back, but even those start sliding after a few washes. I read a blog from some pastry chef in Portland who said the same thing, that professional bakers just use a cheap wooden board or a slab of marble from a salvage place. It's wild how much hype there is for a product that literally can't do its main job. Sorry you wasted $65, but at least you learned before dropping even more. That old wooden board is a classic for a reason.
