My sourdough starter took a full three weeks to get bubbly because my kitchen was too cold.

I kept it in the oven with just the light on, and that finally did the trick, so has anyone else had to baby their starter through a cold snap?

Oh, that's just the yeast being lazy in the cold! My starter acts the same way when my apartment gets drafty.

@jamie940 I read somewhere that cold slows down yeast just like it makes your phone battery drain faster.

Seems like extra work to me. My starter always does fine on the counter, even when it's chilly. Maybe some starters are just weaker?

That "maybe some starters are just weaker" line is a classic move. I see it all the time when people talk about plants or even old cars. If something works easily for them, they assume the thing itself is faulty when others struggle, not that conditions are different.
