Rant: That $60 sourdough starter kit was just flour and water in a fancy jar

I spent a whole Saturday measuring and feeding this thing at exact 12-hour intervals, and it turned out the pre-dried starter was dead on arrival, so who else has gotten burned by those overpriced baking kits?

Right? Did yours come with that little wooden spoon that's somehow supposed to make it "artisanal"? I bought a "heirloom" starter kit for 50 bucks, and it literally looked like someone scraped their bread crusts into a mason jar and called it a day. I followed the instructions to the letter, but after a week of feeding, it just smelled like a gym sock and never bubbled up once. Total waste of money for what is basically free if you just ask a neighbor for a cup of their discard. I honestly think these companies are just preying on people who don't know you can start a starter with just tap water and whole wheat flour.

Man, that sucks. Did you at least try to revive it with a few feedings or was it totally dead from the jump?
