Serious question, my oven thermometer was 40 degrees off and it cost me 3 batches of cookies
Bought a $7 oven thermometer at the hardware store on 5th Street after my chocolate chip cookies kept coming out flat and burnt on the bottom. Turns out my oven runs 40 degrees hot and I spent 2 months blaming the recipe and the butter and the pan. Two months of bad cookies because of a $7 fix. Anyone else find out their oven temp was lying to them?
That kind of thing happens all over the place, not just with ovens. We trust some number on a machine and then build a whole story around why things keep going wrong, blaming ourselves or the recipe or the butter when the real problem is the tool was never right to begin with. Same deal with bathroom scales that are five pounds off, or car speedometers that read a little fast, or a measuring cup that isn't actually a cup. You end up making changes to fix a problem that was never yours in the first place. Two months of bad cookies is a small price for learning to check the tool before you blame yourself, honestly.
