A client in Phoenix told me my invoices were confusing, so I started adding line items.

Now I'm debating if that extra detail is actually helpful or just creates more work for everyone. Do you keep your billing super simple or break everything down?

Yeah, that's a tough one. I get the urge to add all the details after a complaint, but sometimes a super long invoice just makes people's eyes glaze over. I try to find a middle ground, like grouping similar tasks together on one line instead of listing every single little thing. It's a pain to change your system, but clear billing saves so many headaches later.

Grouping similar tasks is the dream. My old invoices looked like a diary of my own panic, every single "wait, forgot this" and "redo that thing" got its own line. I think I once billed for "existential crisis over font choice, 15 minutes." Finding that middle ground is hard when your brain wants to prove you were working every second.

Wait, people actually complain about too much detail on an invoice? I'd kill for that kind of clarity from some of the contractors I've hired.
