A customer at my shop asked me to pay for a new breaker panel with a check

I was finishing up a job in Springfield yesterday when the homeowner handed me a paper check for the final $1,200. He said his bank charges a fee for wire transfers over $1,000, so he always writes checks for big payments. It made me think, how many people still base their payment method on avoiding fees like that? I still deposit checks, but it feels like a step back from digital. Does anyone else get surprised by how payment habits can vary so much by age or location?

Hot take: Checks are ancient history lol. That's actually pretty smart to avoid the wire fee, gotta respect the hustle. My grandpa still mails checks for everything and it drives me nuts waiting for them to clear. Feels like the whole system is set up to nickel and dime you no matter how you pay. Kinda wild that in 2024 we're still dealing with paper because banks want their cut.

But have you ever had a payment bounce because of an app glitch? I still keep checks for certain things... like paying my handyman or sending a wedding gift. It feels more solid than a digital note that could get lost. The paper trail is annoying but sometimes that old system is the only thing that works for everyone.

Used to think checks were totally outdated myself, but this actually changed my mind. I had a client last month who insisted on paying me with a check for a big tree removal job because his bank charges him $25 for any wire transfer over $500. Made me realize some folks just don't have the luxury of choosing the easiest option when fees eat into their cash. Plus, you can't deny a paper check has a solid feeling to it, like you actually got paid instead of just a number on a screen. Still prefer digital for speed, but I get why people stick with checks when banks make everything else painful.
