Finally got my bank to refund a $35 'inactivity fee' after 6 months of trying
So my old savings account from a credit union back home had a rule I totally missed. If you don't make a transaction for a year, they charge you $35. I moved and forgot about the account, and they drained it down to zero with that fee. I only found out when I got a paper statement at my mom's house. I called them, and they said it was in the terms. I argued that a fee that wipes out the whole balance feels wrong, and they kept saying no. I finally filed a complaint with the CFPB last month, and just got an email yesterday that they're refunding the money as a 'one-time courtesy.' It wasn't about the cash, it was the principle. Has anyone else had a bank or credit union hit them with a sneaky fee that just felt unfair?

Used to think people should just read the fine print. Seeing a fee eat an entire account changed my mind. That's not a penalty, it's theft. Good on you for pushing back.

A whole year with no transaction and they just take everything? That's wild.

Check your state's abandoned property laws... sometimes they have to send it to the state before keeping it.

Joke about reading comprehension - "Guess they figure if you don't touch your account for a year you must've forgotten about it entirely, lol. Pretty generous of them to assume people have that much disposable cash just lying around. Kinda like when I forgot about that old gift card for $5 and they started charging me a 'maintenance fee' every month until it hit zero. Felt like my bank was running a little experiment to see how long I'd let them nickel and dime me before I noticed.
