I ignored mobile wallet pay for 2 years thinking it was a gimmick, then my card got skimmed at a gas pump in Dallas
I used to think tapping my phone to pay was just a way for tech companies to track what I buy. Then my debit card got skimmed at a pump off I-35 in Dallas last month and someone drained $340 from my checking account before I even noticed. My credit union flagged it after 2 days but I was on hold for 45 minutes and had to wait 5 business days for the money back. My buddy kept telling me to just use the wallet on my phone because it sends a one time code instead of your real card number, and honestly I thought he was just drinking the kool aid. I finally set it up and used it at the same gas station a week later, and it worked fine, no card number ever touched the pump. The part that sold me was when the guy at the register told me the skimmers only grab magnetic stripe data, so the phone tap skips that whole problem. Now I use it everywhere and my actual card stays in my drawer at home. Am I wrong for thinking the banks should be pushing this way harder instead of just mailing out new cards every time someone gets hit?
Imagine that, banks would rather mail you a new card every 6 months than actually fix the problem. Wild concept. Glad you finally saw the light though, better late than $340 poorer.
