I lost $75 on a 'free' international money transfer that wasn't free at all
I needed to send money to my cousin in Ireland last month and used one of those new app-based services. Their big ad said 'Send money for free!' so I thought I was getting a great deal. I sent $500, and my cousin only got about $425. The hidden cost was in a terrible exchange rate they didn't show me clearly upfront. I only found out when she called me, confused about the missing amount. It felt sneaky because the fee was baked into the conversion, not listed as a separate line item. I wasted $75 because I didn't dig into the fine print on the rate they were actually using. Has anyone else been burned by a transfer that was 'free' but actually cost a ton in a bad exchange rate? What service do you use now that's actually transparent?

Ugh, that's the oldest trick in the book. Honestly, calling it a "free" transfer is just plain wrong when they make their money on a hidden markup. The fee isn't hidden, it's just built into a worse rate than the real market one. I always check the actual exchange rate they're offering against the mid-market rate before I hit send. If they don't show that comparison clearly, I close the app. It's the only way to know what you're really paying.

Ever wonder if those "fee-free" services actually cost more than ones with a clear upfront charge?

Yeah, calling it a "hidden markup" is spot on. It's not really hidden, it's just how they all make their money. The trick is they don't show you the real rate you're getting until the last step.
