I tried to dispute a $47 charge from a gas station pump and my bank sided with THEM, not me.

That's rough, but not a shock. Banks have those pre-auth holds down to a science. They basically freeze extra money on your card at the pump. Saw a guy at the counter last week losing his mind over it. Reminds me of what @the_harper said about his buddy. The hold drops off after a few days, but if you're tight on cash it can mess things up. Always a good idea to pay inside if you can.

Heard banks almost always side with the merchant on pump charges. Honestly feels rigged.

My cousin had a $75 hold pop up last month. It cleared in two days and he got the money back. Banks put those holds on for a reason, like if you drive off without finishing the transaction. It's annoying but calling it "lost" money is a stretch. Most of the time it's just a temporary freeze.
