My credit union teller told me to skip the overdraft opt-in, and it just saved me $70
Back in March I was setting up a new checking account at a branch in Boise and the teller asked if I wanted overdraft protection, and she said to just say no and let the card get declined instead. I forgot about it until my car payment auto-drafted two days before my paycheck hit, and because I never opted in, the charge bounced instead of going through with a $35 fee stacked on another $35 fee. Does opting out actually hurt your account standing anywhere, or is the teller right that the fees are the only thing you're really buying?
