TIL that credit unions actually can return overdraft fees...
After 12 years with a big national bank, I switched to a local credit union in Portland about 6 months ago. Was running low last week and accidentally overdrafted by like $14. Called expecting to eat a $35 fee, but the teller said they had a one-time courtesy refund policy. They actually put the whole fee back in my account within an hour. Never would have believed that before. Anyone else find smaller banks more forgiving with stuff like this?

Respectfully, my credit union charged me a $30 fee for being $2 short and wouldn't budge.

@thomas_torres man that's rough. My credit union up here in Portland was super chill about it, they just refunded the whole $35 fee no questions asked. I guess it really depends on the specific branch or whoever you talk to. Mine even said they do it once a year as a courtesy, which blew my mind after dealing with Chase for so long.

Oh man, that is EXACTLY the kind of luck I'd have too. I bet my credit union would be like "sorry, we have a strict policy of ONE freebie per lifetime" and then just stare at me until I left. It's WILD how much it varies from one branch to the next, even within the same company. I'm honestly surprised mine didn't just say "better luck next time, pal" considering my track record with banks. Glad it worked out for you though, that's a huge win.
