Warning: Don't trust those cheap cash withdrawal machines at gas stations

I used a random ATM at a Shell station in Phoenix last week and got charged $8.50 in fees plus my bank added another $5. It was supposed to be a quick $40 for lunch cash but ended up costing me almost 25% extra. Has anyone else gotten hit with surprise fees from those stand-alone machines?

Read somewhere those machines are often run by third parties with crazy hidden fees attached.

Those machines are often unsecured. They get tampered with for skimmers all the time. Any machine without a visible card slot guard is a no go for me. Plus the fees are robbery plain and simple. Always check if it's a bank owned ATM or a random white label one.

Did you check if your bank has a network of free ATMs? I started only using machines in my credit union's network and haven't paid a fee in years.

So your credit union has its own ATMs?
