I bought a $200 pellet smoker from a yard sale that looked great but had a busted auger motor.

Now I'm out the cash and stuck with a heavy piece of junk, so has anyone else gotten burned on a used smoker that seemed fine at first glance?

My neighbor's yard sale pellet grill looked so good I almost bought it, then I saw the extension cord running from his house just to turn the auger. That thing was basically a fancy outdoor cabinet with a light bulb inside. You really have to treat these like a used car and ask for a test drive, don't you?

Two hundred bucks for a yard sale pellet smoker is a serious gamble. Those auger motors are the first thing to go and they're not cheap to fix. I learned that the hard way with a Traeger I found on Marketplace that looked perfect but was totally dead inside. You almost have to plug it in and see it feed pellets before you hand over any cash.

Ever try to test the auger motor before buying, @ninaowens? That's the only way I'd risk it.
