Myron Mixon vs the younger guys on the circuit now...
I watched an old episode of BBQ Pitmasters from 2010 last night and then caught the latest season. The before was all about patience and low heat, the after is everyone going hot and fast with pellet smokers. It feels like the whole competition scene shifted in like 5 years, you know? Anyone else think the old-school method just looks better on TV?

Hot and fast isn't the enemy, it's just a different skill set. Pellet smokers give way more consistent results in a timed competition, and judges don't care how you got the smoke ring. Old school looks cooler on camera, but winning is winning regardless of how you cook.

I smoked a brisket in a hailstorm once and it still turned out fine.

Markh85, hailstorm brisket sounds about right for the old days. I remember a competition in Georgia back in 2012 where my buddy's pit tent collapsed in the middle of the night. We ended up cooking ribs on a cheap grill we bought from a gas station. Turned out decent but nothing like what you see now with all these digital controllers and wifi probes. The younger guys have a real advantage with that consistency, but I miss the chaos a little, you know? It made for better stories after the fact.
