Swapped my cheap propane tank for a refillable one last summer after a brisket cook in Austin went sideways mid-session

I used to just grab whatever exchange tank was on sale at the gas station until that day when my flame died halfway through a 12-hour cook and I had to run to three places to find a place that had propane at 10 PM, has anyone else had a tank run dry at the worst possible moment?

Dude, that exact thing happened to me last Fourth of July. I was in the middle of smoking two pork butts for a party and the flame just sputtered out at hour eight. I had to disconnect the tank, shake it to see if there was anything sloshing around in there, and then drive 15 minutes to a Walmart that was somehow still open. Now I always keep a full backup tank on hand, even if it feels like overkill. Nothing kills the vibe faster than a dead fire mid-cook.

Yo, I feel this in my soul. I swear every time I think I've got enough propane to finish a cook, the universe is just waiting to laugh at me. I once had my flame die right as I was pulling a brisket off the smoker to wrap it, and I stood there staring at the cold grill like it personally betrayed me. Now I keep two spare tanks in the garage and my wife says I have a problem, but at least I'm not running to a gas station at midnight in my flip flops anymore.
