Fixed my mom's leaky faucet after putting it off for 6 months
Last weekend I finally drove over to my mom's place in Phoenix to fix that kitchen faucet that's been dripping since May. I figured it would take an hour tops, but the cartridge was so corroded I ended up having to cut the supply lines and replace those too. Took me four hours total but she didn't have to call a handyman and get charged $300. Has anyone else put off a simple fix for family way longer than they should have?

Honestly, isn't four hours of your time worth more than just paying someone $300?

Three hundred bucks is what I paid last year to get my dryer vent cleaned out. Took the guy maybe an hour and a half. But the thing is, most of us aren't actually worth as much per hour as we think when it comes to home repairs. I spent six hours once trying to fix a squeaky door hinge and ended up with a door that didn't close right and a busted knuckle. People overvalue their own time in theory but then waste whole weekends on projects they're bad at because they hate spending money. The real cost isn't just the four hours, it's the frustration, the trip to the hardware store for the wrong part, and the eventual call to a professional anyway.
