I dropped $400 on a family tree website that gave me nothing but wrong info
Got really into my family history last year and signed up for one of those big genealogy sites. They charged me $400 for a year of access to their 'premium records'. Spent weeks building a tree based on their hints, only to find out half the people they linked were from the wrong country. The final straw was when it said my great-grandfather was born in 1905, but I have his actual birth certificate that says 1898. Has anyone found a better way to do this without getting ripped off?

Wow that's a huge price difference on the birth year. Did you try to get a refund from the site when you showed them the certificate? I'm wondering if they have any process for correcting bad data or if they just ignore it.

Yeah I used to think sites would fix bad data if you showed proof. But after trying to get a refund like you said, I learned they mostly ignore it unless you make a huge fuss. It's just easier for them to say no.
