I've been storing my photo prints wrong for twenty years

Found a box of old pictures from my wedding in 2004, and the colors had faded badly. A friend who works at a museum in Boston told me I should have kept them in a cool, dark place, not in the attic where it gets hot. I always figured a box was a box. Now I'm scanning everything before it gets worse. Anyone else have a method for saving old photos that actually works?

Attics are brutal for photos, @milarodriguez. I put mine in acid-free sleeves inside a plastic bin in the closet. It's cheap and stops the fading.
