Learned something wild about my memory from a bus ride in Austin

I was on the #7 bus heading to work last week and realized I could not remember a single detail from the past 3 nights of driving home. Like zero recall of traffic, songs on the radio, or even pulling into my driveway. It freaked me out enough that I started keeping a small voice memo on my phone right after each shift. Has anyone else had that feeling where your brain just blanks on whole chunks of your day?

The bus thing sounds scary, I've had that happen too. It's unsettling when you realize your brain just... skipped a whole part of your day without telling you.

Why are you acting like this is a big deal when people zone out driving all the time?

You said "zone out driving all the time" like it's no big deal, but I've got a personal track record here. I once drove fifteen miles on the highway completely on autopilot, only to realize I had no memory of the last three exits. That wasn't zoning out, that was me running on backup software my brain downloaded from a sketchy site. I'm pretty sure my car could file for emancipation by now, given how many times I've left it in park while my mind moved to a different zip code. So yeah, for me it's a big deal because I'm one wrong daydream away from ending up in a different state with no memory of how I got there. Zoning out is fine until you've got the navigational skills of a potato.
