Lost $200 on a language app subscription I barely used
Ngl, I signed up for this fancy language learning app back in January because I was hyped about traveling to Japan. Paid upfront for the yearly plan at $199, thinking the monthly price was a steal. Fast forward to now and I opened it maybe 10 times total. The guilt of not using it made me avoid it even more, like a weird cycle. I just canceled and they offered a partial refund of like $40, which is garbage. Has anyone else fallen for the yearly subscription trap and regretted it?

Man I just set a calendar reminder to cancel before the renewal hit.

Oh man, this hits way too close to home. I did the exact same thing with a meditation app last year. Spent like $150 on a annual plan because I was convinced I'd become this zen master who meditates twice a day. I think I opened it maybe 8 times and one of those times was just to try and cancel. What got me was how they marketed it as this huge savings compared to monthly, but really they're banking on you forgetting you even have it. The psychological guilt thing is so real though, like every time I saw the app icon on my phone I'd feel bad and just scroll past it faster. My bank actually flagged the payment one time and asked if it was fraudulent and I was like no, just foolish. I finally canceled when I realized I was paying more per session than I would at an actual meditation class I wasn't going to either.
