My $80 'family history' software was a total scam

I bought it to organize old photos and stories, but it just corrupted the files and locked them behind a paywall. Has anyone actually found a good, simple way to back this stuff up digitally?

My old scanner and a free Dropbox folder saved everything.

Read a blog post that basically said the same thing, just get the stuff scanned and backed up somewhere safe.

My local library had a free workshop last month about digitizing family stuff. The librarian said to just use Google Photos or Apple Photos for the pictures, and plain text files for the stories. She warned about those fancy software traps. What did you end up trying first?

That librarian gave solid advice (the fancy software can be a real money pit). I started with old letters in a text file, which felt way less scary.
