My brother's wedding toast went off the rails and nobody talks about it properly

I was at my brother's wedding last summer in a tiny rented hall near Austin. When I stood up to give my toast, the microphone kept cutting out and I panicked and started talking about the time we got stuck in a broken elevator for 45 minutes. Everyone laughed at first but then my brother's new wife looked really upset because she thought I was comparing marriage to being trapped. I had to quickly say it was about learning to be patient with each other which saved it but barely. Has anyone else had a sincere moment get completely twisted by bad timing or bad equipment?

Oh man, that's brutal. I once gave a speech at a friend's engagement party where I accidentally called her by her sister's name and then to cover it up I said "same family tree, different branch" which just made everyone stare at me like I was having a stroke. You know how you rehearse something in your head and it sounds smooth and then reality hits you with a busted microphone and a hot room. At least you caught yourself and turned it around, I just stood there sweating and slurring my words for what felt like an hour. That elevator story actually sounds kind of sweet once you explained it though, trapped or not.

Wait wait wait, you said "same family tree, different branch" as a recovery line? lmao that's incredible, I can't believe you actually said that out loud in front of people. It's the kind of thing that sounds clever in the shower at 2 AM but hits different when everyone's staring at you with those confused pity eyes. Honestly though, I respect the commitment to seeing it through instead of just trailing off and pretending you choked on a cracker or something.
