My grandma's neighbor repeated the same rice pudding recipe to me three times last month
She's 91 and lives alone in Toledo, and every visit she tells me about her mom's rice pudding with the same three details, the cinnamon stick, the short-grain rice, and how they ate it cold on the porch. Last time I caught myself finishing her sentences in my head instead of writing anything down, and it hit me that when she's gone those three details go with her. Does anyone else keep a note on their phone for stuff like this, or am I overthinking it?
Writing it down might be the thing that keeps it alive, though. My aunt scribbled her mom's soup recipe on an index card and now the whole family makes it every winter, so maybe the note is less about losing her and more about passing it on.
