My uncle told me to always put a dry bay leaf in my flour bin to keep weevils out

I laughed at him for three years until I finally found a weevil infestation in my pantry last spring and after cleaning everything out I tossed a bay leaf in the new bag of flour and haven't seen a single bug since, so has anyone else ever had some old timer's advice actually work against all logic?

That "against all logic" part is spot on, I thought the same thing until I tried it. The bay leaf scent messes with their ability to find food, it's not killing them it just makes the flour invisible to them basically. Throw one in your rice and oatmeal too, works just as good without tasting like anything.

Wait, are we really this scared of weevils? Seems like a lot of fuss over something you can just sift out.

No kidding, same thing happened to me with my grandpa's "put a nail in your apple to keep it from bruising" trick. I rolled my eyes so hard I almost passed out, but then I tried it with a rusty nail and honestly it worked? The apples softened way slower. Bay leaf thing is real too though, I chucked one in my flour after reading this and it's been weevil free for months. My wife still makes fun of me for it but I don't care, it's free pest control.
