Picked the wrong backup plan and lost 4 years of photos
I had to choose between cloud storage and an external hard drive for my family photos, and I went with the hard drive to save $10 a month. It crashed after 2 years and I lost everything from my son's first steps to our Alaska trip in 2018. Has anyone else learned this lesson the hard way or found a cheap backup that actually lasts?

Stick a hard drive in a safety deposit box" - I'd probably forget which box I put it in, knowing my luck. The bank would be like "sir you've been here 3 hours and that's just your lunch you're looking for.

My backup drive lives in my sock drawer and honestly that feels about as safe as a bank vault at this point. Works fine for me, just gotta remember not to grab the wrong sock when I'm running late for work!
