PSA: Jot down your fish tank water test results each week

Last Thursday I realized my pH had slowly dropped from 7.2 to 6.1 over 6 months because I had no baseline to compare against, and now two of my tetras are gone - has anyone else lost fish from not keeping a log?

Totally agree, man. I lost a whole school of cardinal tetras last year because I thought my tank was stable and just eyeballed it. Now I've got a little notebook in my stand and I check everything the same day each week, saved my ass when I caught a nitrite spike early.

Is it really that serious though? I mean yeah fish die sometimes but a whole notebook and weekly dedication seems a bit much for a hobby tank. Unless you're running a breeding operation or something I think people just overthink this stuff.

Oh man, that really sucks. I've been there too with the gradual pH creep, it's so sneaky because everything seems fine day to day. Keeping a simple weekly log has totally saved me from losing more fish too, especially when I started noticing my KH dropping month over month.
