Stopped at a diner in rural Kansas and the waitress knew my order before I said it

I rolled into this little place off Route 56 around 6 AM last Tuesday, the only customer under 70 in the room. The waitress just nodded at me and brought out black coffee and a western omelet without me saying a word, and I hadn't been there in over two years. How do small-town folks keep track of everyone like that, and does anyone else find it kind of unsettling or just plain impressive?

That "knew my order" thing is wild, happens to me every time I hit the same diner in my hometown after months away. Impressive as heck, they never forget your face or coffee preference.

Tip from someone who worked in a diner for years: if you want them to remember you, tip well and tip consistently. A couple of extra dollars each visit goes a long way, and they'll remember your coffee order for years even if you stop showing up for a bit.
