Watched my grandpa's memory slip away in 8 months and now I record everything
My grandpa in Toledo could name every street downtown back in January, but by September he couldn't remember my grandma's name. The doctor said it was just aging, but I saw the real change happen after he stopped going to his morning diner and sat alone with the TV all day. How do you hold onto the things that make someone who they are when their own brain starts erasing them?
That line about him sitting alone with the TV all day hits hard, because I see that same thing happening to people all over, not just with memory stuff but with anyone who slowly stops doing the small daily things that kept them plugged in. The diner, the walk, the same folks saying hi every morning, that stuff is medicine nobody writes a script for. Once it's gone, the slide gets faster, and I don't know how you hold onto someone when the routine that held them together is the first thing to go.
