Had to fake a smile at my own birthday dinner last week
My sister planned this whole surprise party at a loud restaurant in Nashville, but I had just found out my dog has a tumor that morning. How do you even get through an evening like that without ruining everyone else's fun?

Not to be cold, but dogs get tumors all the time and most are benign. You could have just said you were tired and saved everyone the performance anxiety. Life happens, people can handle a quick "long week" excuse.

My 42nd birthday landed right on the same day my mechanic told me my transmission was shot and it would cost 3 grand to fix. I spent the whole dinner at my mother-in-law's house doing mental math on credit card payments while everyone sang happy birthday. I finally just excused myself to the bathroom and sat on the floor for ten minutes staring at the tile grout. Sometimes you just have to smile and nod and remember that nobody's going to quiz you later on whether you actually enjoyed the cake.
