Hit my 40th birthday and finally stopped faking the group chat enthusiasm

Turned 40 last month and my phone blew up with the usual 'happy birthday' texts from friends I haven't seen in 2 years. I replied with the same smiley emojis and thanks, but that night I actually counted how many of those people I'd talked to in the last year. It was 4 out of 23, and that number caught me off guard. What made me change my mind was realizing I was spending more energy pretending to be excited for their life updates than actually reaching out to the ones I missed. Has anyone else hit a milestone age and just wanted to delete half their contact list instead of keeping up the act?

Quit acting like those texts are a burden when half those folks probably feel the same way.

Honestly never thought about it that way, but you're right. I used to just see the texts as piling up, but now I realize most people are probably just as unsure how to answer.

Man, people really overthink a simple text message these days.
