I smiled through a family dinner while my dog was at the emergency vet

Last Friday, we had my in-laws over for a big meal. My dog got sick that afternoon and I had to rush him to the animal hospital. I came back home, put on a happy face, and served dinner like nothing was wrong. The whole time I was thinking about him alone in a cage. I kept laughing at jokes while my stomach was in knots. Has anyone else had to act totally fine during a real crisis?
