My boss said my project updates were 'a data dump, not a story' last quarter, so I started opening every slide with a single customer quote.

It felt like a gut punch at first, but now I see how it forces me to connect the numbers back to a real person's problem, which actually makes the meetings less tense... has anyone else had a piece of criticism that just clicked and changed a routine like that?

Read a thing about how our brains are wired for stories, not spreadsheets. That boss advice is spot on... makes the numbers actually mean something.

Huh... I'd find that so patronizing.

Totally get that feeling, it happens all the time now. Feels like everyone's trying to manage how you feel instead of just talking straight. You see it in ads, customer service, even from friends sometimes. It just makes real talk feel fake.
