My car's alternator died in a grocery store parking lot on Tuesday

I had to smile and tell my mom on the phone it was no big deal while I waited for the tow. Inside I just felt so stupid for not seeing the signs sooner, and the repair bill was almost $800. How do you guys handle putting on a brave face when something expensive and stressful happens out of the blue?

That "why pretend" line hits hard... because sometimes the pretending is the only thing holding you together. Like saying "I'm good" when your pet just died, because explaining it to the cashier would make you fall apart right there. Or laughing with coworkers after a brutal fight at home, because bringing that darkness into the office just isn't an option. The act isn't about lying to others, it's about buying yourself enough time to just get through the day.
