Serious question, did faking happy at my desk for 14 days actually make it worse?
I work front desk at a dental office in Boise and I smile at people 8 hours a day no matter what. Two weeks back I started this dumb trick where I set a phone alarm for 2pm labeled "real face" and for 60 seconds I just let my face do whatever it wants in the supply closet. Sounds silly but by day 4 I noticed I wasn't snapping at my boyfriend over nothing. I used to think venting online was the only way to let it out, but one minute in a closet with the door shut beat two hours of typing angry posts. The weird part is my actual smiles with patients feel lighter now, like my face isn't stuck. Has anyone else tried giving themselves a scheduled minute to drop the act, or does it backfire after a while?
Trying scheduling the drop the act minute for the end of your day instead of the middle, because the supply closet reset might be working for a different reason than you think. When you let your real face out at 2pm you basically tell your brain the fake smiling has an off switch, so the rest of the day feels less like a trap you can't escape. Doing it too early could backfire though, since you still have hours of smiling left and the gap between real and fake might start to feel bigger instead of smaller.
