Smiled through my sister's wedding in Denver while my own marriage was falling apart
My wife and I said our vows 14 years ago next Saturday, and this past weekend I stood up as best man at my little sister's wedding in Denver grinning for every photo. Nobody there knew we'd been sleeping in separate rooms since March, or that I cried in the hotel stairwell between the toast and the first dance. My brother asked how married life was and I said "couldn't be better" on autopilot, which is the exact lie I keep telling everyone. How do you handle big family events when you're secretly miserable, do you skip them or just push through?
I read this thing once about how pretending to be fine at family stuff actually makes it worse, like you're adding a layer of shame on top of the sadness. So maybe the move is telling one person the truth before the event, just so you're not carrying it alone in a stairwell. Pushing through the whole day fake sounds exhausting, but you don't have to do it completely solo either.
