Spent 4 hours trying to fix my mom's printer and ended up crying at the kitchen table
My mom asked me to set up her new wireless printer before her book club came over on Saturday, and what should've been a 10 minute job turned into a 4 hour nightmare with driver downloads and a router that kept kicking it off. I kept telling her it was fine and smiling every time she poked her head in asking if I wanted more coffee. By hour 3 I was under the table yanking cables and honestly I just sat down and teared up because I didn't want her to see I had no clue what I was doing. She finally said "just leave it, we'll read off my phone" and I felt like such a fake for pretending I had it handled. Does anyone else do this thing where you'd rather quietly fall apart than admit to your own mom that you can't fix something?
4 hours is a long time to fight a printer, but I'd push back on the idea that hiding it was the wrong call. My dad is 78 and still thinks of himself as the guy who fixes everything, so when his laptop died last year I drove over, poked at it for an hour, then told him the hard drive was shot and we'd take it to the shop Tuesday. He felt better thinking I'd tried and it was a part problem, not him. Sometimes the kind thing is to take the hit yourself and let them keep their picture of you. Your mom saying "we'll just read off my phone" was her letting you off the hook, not judging you for it.
