TIL my friend's 'perfect' baby shower was a total front
I was at the party in her spotless living room, smiling while she opened gifts, but I knew she'd been crying on the phone to me for weeks about her husband's job loss. She served store-bought cupcakes but told everyone she baked them. Anyone else see a friend put on a huge show when things are actually falling apart?

Honestly, @avery_jackson has a point about just trying to get through the day. When my car got repo'd last year, I still drove to our game night in my buddy's old truck and made a joke about "trying out a new ride." Lying about the cupcakes is probably the same kind of small fib to keep the peace when you're too tired to explain the real mess.

Yeah but the lying about the cupcakes is the weird part to me. I mean, if you're that stressed, just say you picked them up from the store. Making up a story about baking them adds this extra layer of performance that feels different than just trying to keep things simple.

Wait, are we sure the cupcakes thing is her trying to show off? I've totally bought store cupcakes for a party when I was too stressed to bake, and just said I made them to avoid a whole conversation about it. Sometimes keeping up appearances is less about being fake and more about just getting through the day without everyone's pity.
