Took my kids to the local library reading hour for the first time yesterday
I've been telling everyone I'm fine and super busy with family stuff (you know the script). But honestly I went there dreading it because social stuff with other parents makes me anxious. What caught me off guard was the librarian Mrs. Davis remembering my oldest's name from a visit 8 months ago she must have checked her log or something. Is it weird that a stranger remembering a detail about my kid hit me harder than most of my "happy" interactions this whole year?

@janah83 that dentist story hit close to home. My wife's eye doctor remembered her name from a visit two years ago and she literally sat in the car crying for ten minutes after the appointment. It's like when people actually pay attention to you it breaks something loose you didn't even know was there. The library thing with your kid is definitely not weird. I think we get so used to being invisible in our own lives that when someone sees us or our kids it feels like a shock to the system. Mrs. Davis probably remembered because that's just how she is with kids. I bet she does that for lots of families. It makes you wonder how many small moments of being noticed we miss because we're too busy telling ourselves we're fine.

the part about missing small moments cause we're too busy telling ourselves we're fine really got me. idk, i think sometimes we tell ourselves we're fine so much that we actually start believing it and then when someone notices something it like cracks the whole thing open. maybe it's just me but i wonder if we do that on purpose without realizing it.

My friend cried when her dentist remembered she had a fear of drills from three years ago.
