Unpopular opinion: I stopped pretending to be fine at work and my boss actually appreciated it

I tried being honest with my manager about being overwhelmed with 5 client projects last week, expecting to get judged, but instead she reassigned two tasks and said she wished I'd spoken up sooner. Has anyone else found that dropping the 'I'm fine' act actually works better than expected?

Ugh yeah that's exactly what happened to me. I finally told my boss I was drowning in reports and she was like "why didn't you say something sooner?" and actually gave me a helper. It's wild how much easier things get when you just drop the act.

First week I stopped pretending I had it under control, my whole workload got cut in half. People can't help you if they don't know you're drowning, plain and simple. Next time I'll speak up way sooner.

Not sure if I'm buying that it's always that simple... sometimes bosses aren't that chill about it. Had a coworker who told her manager she was overwhelmed and got put on a "performance improvement plan" instead of getting help. Just depends on who you're dealing with I guess. Maybe your boss is just one of the good ones.
