Why does nobody talk about how many hours of their life they spend smiling at work?

I just did the math on my own job after reading a random study online that said the average office worker spends 3 hours a day pretending to be interested in small talk. That comes out to over 30 full days a year for me personally if you add up all the fake smiles and nods. Has anyone else ever calculated their own fake-happy time and felt a little weird about it?

@robins83 47 fake laughs in one meeting is almost impressive in a sad way. Has anyone thought about the opposite angle though - what about the people who are genuinely smiling and happy at work but now feel weird about it because of threads like this? I had a painter on my crew years ago who was just a naturally cheerful guy, always whistling and smiling. Made everyone else feel like they were slacking off on misery. Now if I see someone smiling too much at a client meeting I wonder if they're faking it better than me or if they actually like their job. That's the real mind game.

Honestly those fake smiles are just part of being professional, not a big deal.

My coworker Dave once counted 47 fake laughs in one meeting.
