A recruiter in Dallas asked why I wanted out of my old job and my answer made her frown, that frown saved me from a bad move
I was about 3 weeks into job hunting back in March and feeling pretty good about myself, until this recruiter in Dallas asked me point blank why I wanted to leave my current spot. I gave her the usual speech about growth and new challenges and she just frowned and wrote something down and the call got real short after that. She called back two days later and said my reason sounded like something I rehearsed, and that hiring managers can smell it from a mile away. She made me write out the honest version, which was that my old boss left and the new one moved my start time to 6am and I was tired of it. Next interview I said that instead, plain as day, and the guy laughed and we talked for 40 minutes. Got the offer and took it, and I start Monday. Point is, polish makes people suspicious and real reasons make them listen. What is the real reason you want out of where you are right now, and have you tried just saying it?
